Admission

Process

Admissions are closed for the 2008-2009 academic year. The online application for 2009-2010 will be posted in early fall 2008.

Deadline for 2008-2009 admission: December 17, 2007

All applicants are required to apply through the Division of Humanities online application. Paper applications are not accepted.

All application materials must be submitted to the Division of the Humanities via the address provided on the application website. Materials sent directly to the department will not be accepted.

Applications are considered in early winter. Applicants will be notified of their status by the Humanities Admissions office in March.

Requirements

Areas of Study

The admissions form will allow you to choose from 6 areas of study. We understand that many of our applicants have cross-area interests. Please choose the area you consider your primary field of interest.

Japan
Korea
Early China (up to 2nd c.)
Middle Period China (Tang and Song 7th c. 13th c.)
Early Modern China (Yuan, Ming, Qing)
Modern China (late 19th - 21st c.)

FLAS Fellowship

U.S. citizens whose programs will include area studies and extensive language training may be eligible for a National Resources Foreign Languages and Area Studies (FLAS/Title VI) Fellowship. If you are interested, please email the humanities admissions office at org_hdos@uchicago.edu with 'Title VI Application' as the subject. Include information regarding your academic interests and previous language study. If you are eligible, they will send you a Title VI application. Foreign applicants are not eligible.

Admissions Decisions

Admissions decision letters will be mailed from the Admissions Office on or about March 5, 2008. No decision information can be given through phone or email by the department.

All admissions decisions are sent in writing from the admissions office in early March. No decisions will be given in phone or email. Unless you are contacted by the department, please direct all questions about your application directly to the admissions office.

 

*English Proficiency Requirement. All applicants who are not U.S. citizens or U.S. permanent residents must take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the test administered by the International English Language Testing System (IELTS). Domestic applicants whose native language is not English who have not attended schools where instruction is in English also may be required to submit TOEFL or IELTS scores. Students who have studied in English (in India, Pakistan, the Philippines, Hong Kong, Singapore, African countries, etc.) are not exempt from this requirement. The only exceptions are students from Australia, the English-speaking provinces of Canada, New Zealand, English medium universities in South Africa, or the United Kingdom. Exceptions may be granted as well to foreign applicants who have completed more than one year of full-time study in a U.S. college or university.
